From the wealth of the wool trade, merchants of the Calais Staple - sped their way into the aristocracy. Later, statemen, bibliophile, book collector and patron of scholars. Sir Charles Hanbury Williams ( wrote much satirical verse, and Horace Walpole professed to believe him the greatest poet of his generation), his poem on the Struggle to Succeed Ellys.

Due to ignorance and flawed planning laws in the United Kingdom, our historic environment is being compromised, if not destroyed. Millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money are being squandered, which leads to false historical narratives.

Children do not ask to come into this world. However, when we bring them up, we have a duty of care, if we wish to create a more socially cohesive society. It must not be left solely to teachers. We must all take part.

Parliament’s National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) puts our historic environment in jeopardy. I am therefore appealing to the Government to please remove the historic environment from this Framework, or to have the NPPF go back to Parliament for further consideration.

A Hidden Gem

Ellys Manor House (EMH) is without doubt, one of our most significant historic homes in the United Kingdom. EMH is not about bombast or bling, this is about integrity. The architectural language of the building perfectly encapsulates early modern European, British and Hanseatic League history, thus we are a testament to the Northern Renaissance. The house and the adjacent church tower were built by a member of the Ellys family, an English wool merchant of the Staple of Calais.

This dissertation examines a little known collection of 15th century allegorical wall paintings in Ellys Manor, a small, privately owned and well preserved English wool-merchant’s house in Lincolnshire.
